Mount Baker Success, Coleman Deming
We had an EPIC day on 7/2/2025, climbing Mount Baker with 15 people in total. Liz and I were excited to be on the mountain again, it was the largest group of people we had ever taken up. Out of 13 new climbers, 10 managed to reach the summit on their very first mountaineering experience. One group was semi-independent, having just recently taken a crevasse rescue course. The three climbers who did not make the summit still had a fantastic day and they put in a solid effort. Overall, it was a great success and a beautiful trip. Conditions were just about as perfect as they could be.
The day before our climb we had crevasse rescue and glacier training in the climbing gym, located conveniently at our house :) We loaned out a bunch of gear, went over packing, glacier travel, ascending a rope and hauling out an injured climber. By 7PM we were sound asleep until 12:30AM. We carpooled to the heliotrope trailhead and began at 2AM. It was a 2 hour climb to Hogsback camp. The snowline started here, which was convenient for transitions. We filled up water, put on our harnesses and crampons. The rest of the climb went smoothly and efficiently. Surprisingly, there were no open crevasses, except on the lower glacier. The Roman wall had a nice bootpack to the ridge as well. We were on the summit in 8 hours and the views were some of the best I had experienced on Baker. The descent went without incident, minus some slushy snow… Liz even went up the Roman wall twice! We were finished 14 hours from our start at 2AM. The beers tasted delicious :)
