FAQ

Q: What kinds of climbs do you offer?
We specialize in guided mountaineering trips across the Pacific Northwest, including peaks such as Mount Baker, Shuksan, and other spectacular peaks in the Cascades. These trips range from introductory glacier climbs to more technical alpine objectives.

Q: Who are your trips designed for?
Our trips are for fit adults with hiking/backpacking experience who want to move into mountaineering: using crampons, ice axes, snow and glacier travel, and introductory alpine climbs. You don’t need to be a pro climber — but you should have a good fitness baseline.

Q: How do I book a trip and secure my spot?
Visit the “Trips” page, pick the climb you’re interested in, check upcoming dates and pricing. Send us a message with the climb and date of your choice.

Q: What is your cancellation & reschedule policy?
Payment is required two weeks prior to departure. Cancellations will be refunded or credited towards another date if you need to cancel. Any cancellations before 48 hours in advance will receive a full refund or credit.

Gear, Preparation & Fitness

Q: What gear do I need to bring?
After booking we’ll send a detailed gear list. You only need to bring mountaineering boots, food, a backpack and all clothing. We provide the group technical gear. We are happy to help you find the gear you need if you’re missing anything from the list. We will go over all the gear in a phone call or in person during the training.

Q: Can I rent equipment if I don’t have it?
Yes — we work with local gear rental shops in Bellingham and Seattle to arrange crampons, ice axes, helmets, etc. We’ll provide rental options during your booking process.

Q: How should I train and prepare physically?
We recommend at least 4-6 weeks of aerobic conditioning (trail runs or hikes with a pack), stair climbs, strength training. All of our climbs typically last anywhere from 6 to 18 hours.

Logistics, Safety & Trip Details

Q: Where do your trips depart from and what is logistics like?
Most trips are based in the North Cascades region of Washington. We’ll confirm meeting location, times, transport details (trailhead access, parking) once you book.

Q: What happens if weather or conditions are unsafe?
Safety is our top priority and we want to maximize enjoyment from our trips. We only climb in good weather. If conditions (e.g., weather, avalanche risk) make the planned route unsafe or unpleasant, we can either choose an alternate route of similar value, reschedule the trip, or provide a refund or full credit toward a future date.

Q: What are your guides’ qualifications?
All our guides are certified and experienced mountaineers: glacier travel, crevasse rescue, rope rescue, first-aid/wilderness medicine. We bring years of mountaineering in the Cascades and understand local conditions. Our guides are both first responders and members of Bellingham Mountain Rescue.

Q: What’s included in the trip cost?
Professional guiding, a half day of crevasse rescue training for glaciated climbs, group technical gear (ropes, anchors, safety equipment), permits where required. Not included: personal gear (clothing & boots), meals, transport to/from trailhead (unless local).

After the Climb & Extras

Q: Can I customize a private or group climb?
Absolutely. We specialize in custom expeditions for individuals, friends, and corporate groups. Pick your peak (e.g., Mount Shuksan, Mount Baker), your dates, and we’ll tailor the route, logistics, and training plan. We have likely climbed all popular mountains in the Pacific Northwest and we are happy to customize any trip you desire. We also have extensive expedition experience if you are looking for a bigger trip.

Q: What will I return home with (beyond the summit)?
You’ll gain mountaineering skills (ice axe/crampon proficiency, glacier safety), unmatched alpine views, camaraderie, and a photo set of your climbing day. We always have a fancy camera with us on the mountain to capture special moments. You’ll get a custom T-shirt as well. Many of our climbers say they will always hold onto the memories they gained from summiting a cascade peak with us.

Q: I still have questions—how do I get in touch?
Just reach out — we’re happy to answer any additional questions to help you decide. Email Anthonymarra@climbhigherground.com or fill out our contact form, and we’ll respond within 24 hours.
